Movie Night Showing of:
"Nim's Island," 2008. Orphaned by the death of her oceanographic mother, 11 year old Nim (Abigail Breslin) accompanies her father, marine biologist Jack Rusoe (Gerard Butler) to an uncharted, uninhabited tropical island in the South Pacific that Nim makes her own. Competent and quick-witted, Nim’s playmates include some very smart animals - Selkie the sea lion, Fred the lizard, Galilio the pelican and a turtle named Chicca, in “our own secret, perfect world.” When Jack fails to return from a storm at sea while hunting for nanoplankton, Abigail seeks help on the internet from Alex Rover in San Francisco, author of her favorite adventure novels. “Alex” (a mythic outback hero also played by Butler) however turns out to be the fearfully reclusive Alexandra (Jodie Foster) who must overcome her “borderline agoraphobia” - “I don’t wanna touch the world, it might not be sanitary,” in coming to Nim’s rescue. Meanwhile, alone on the island, Nim mounts a defense against an invasion of vacation tourists from the cruise ship Buccaneer. An engaging adventure fantasy, “eco-friendly and frolic-packed.”
